Have you been given a piece of jewelry that doesn't fit? A purchase error, an old piece of jewelry or one you acquired in your youth... there are many reasons to consider changing the size of one of your pieces of jewelry. Here's an overview of how MATY can help you change the size of a ring, necklace or bracelet.

How do I change the size of a ring?

Narrowing a ring that's too wide, or enlarging one that's too small: you may be faced with one of these two problems, and you don't want to wear your ring with a chain, or change it on your finger. The means and methods for doing so are different. What's more, not all rings can be resized. Here's a look at the possible solutions, depending on your needs.

Is it possible to shrink a ring?

If your jewelry is precious, contact a jewelry expert like MATY to ensure that ring shrinking does not damage it. Whether its value is symbolic or intrinsic, think carefully before making your decision: having a ring shrunk at a jeweller's involves a loss of material and is a definitive solution. However, finger volume can vary over the course of a lifetime.

What's more, not all rings can be reduced, even by a professional, especially those in palladium. Diamond and gold-plated rings can also be complicated to shrink.

There are two other, less definitive solutions. The first is to wear your ring lined with a thin band of the right size, which will prevent you from losing it. The second is to use a ring reducer: this accessory is placed palm-side to reduce the space between the jewel and your finger. Tubes, spiral clips, springs, rods... models are available in various materials depending on the ring to be reduced (Gold, Silver, Silicone, etc.).

Is it possible to enlarge a ring or wedding band?

Your MATY jeweller can also enlarge a ring that's too small for your fingers. Here again, the material of your jewel matters a lot: it's impossible to change the size of a ceramic or palladium ring, for example, but it's easy to do so on rings in 375 or 750 gold, so don't hesitate to ask our MATY jeweler experts. Enlarging a single-size ring does not usually involve adding material. Professionals most often use a triboulet (a cone-shaped tool used in jewellery-making) to gently stretch your jewel.

On the other hand, for an enlargement larger than one size, it's essential to add material. Cutting is therefore also necessary. Depending on the size to be reached, the quality of the metal, its color, the presence or absence of stones... the method used differs. The more complex your ring, the longer the jeweler's work. So the cost of enlarging a gold wedding band will not be the same as enlarging a diamond ring.

Adjusting the size of a bracelet or necklace

Enlarge or shrink mesh jewelry

Narrowing or enlarging a mesh bracelet or necklace is, in principle, the easiest job for your jeweller. For a piece that's too wide, a cut to remove excess mesh and move the clasp is usually all that's needed. An intermediate clasp can also be added.

Similarly, if a necklace or bracelet is too tight, you can narrow it by adding mesh or using the extension chains sold at MATY.

Modifying a one-piece jewel

If your bracelet or necklace is a one-piece piece of jewelry, a jeweller can adjust it. As with a ring, the professional will need to assess the feasibility of the size change and the work required, in order to determine the cost of a transformation. Note that while most jewelers offer ring enlargement or shrinkage, not all do size changes for necklaces or bracelets.

Don't forget to look at our Necklaces product sheets for the chain length simulator, which shows you the position of the jewel on your neck or décolleté according to the size of the chain.
