Cultural history of aquamarine

Aquamarine is prized by many civilizations for its color, reminiscent of clear water. In ancient Egypt, the stone was revered for its protective and soothing properties. Related to the goddess of the sea, this talisman protected sailors and travelers on their crossings. For the ancient Greeks, this light blue stone represented Aphrodite, goddess of love. They used it to create jewelry and decorate their temples dedicated to the goddess, representing the connection between love and the sea. Today, aquamarine continues to be highly prized for its beauty and symbolism, making it a popular choice for jewelry and as a gift to celebrate March birthdays.

Gemmologist's advice

Caring for and recharging your aquamarine

Véronique,
gemmologist at MATY for 32 years, reveals her secrets...

To recharge your aquamarine, you can leave it exposed for one or two hours in full sunlight, or overnight facing the moon.

Fortunately, aquamarine is easy to care for. Simply run it under lukewarm water to clean it, or put it on a steam bath with non-calcareous water. Finally, wipe the stone with a soft cloth.
