What's the difference between 375 (9-carat) and 750 (18-carat) gold?

Since pure gold is naturally malleable, when making gold jewelry, it must be alloyed with other metals to create a sturdy and durable piece. It is the process of alloying gold with other metals that gives it its color and strength. These two designations therefore indicate the proportion of gold used. Pure gold contains 1,000 parts per thousand of fine gold, so a piece of 750 gold jewelry contains 750 parts per thousand, and a piece of 375 gold contains 375. A piece of 375 gold jewelry has a lower proportion of fine gold than a piece of 750 gold jewelry, so its price will be more affordable. Whether it’s 750 gold or 375 gold, your MATY jewelry will be crafted with the same care and will have the same appearance.

Composition of yellow, white and pink gold

Jewelry made of 750 gold and 375 gold always contains other metals such as fine silver, copper, and palladium. It is by varying the proportions of these metals that we give gold its different colors. With more copper and less silver, we get rose gold. More silver in the alloy results in white gold, also known as gray gold.Yellow gold is the natural color of gold. Its alloy is balanced to preserve its color and consists of 75% pure gold, 12.5% silver, and 12.5% copper.
White gold is an alloy consisting of 75% pure gold and 25% silver, which gives it its white color. White gold jewelry is then dipped in a rhodium bath to set its color. Depending on the wear and tear of the white gold jewelry, the rhodium plating can be renewed.
The color ofrose gold is achieved by mixing 75% pure gold with an alloy of 15% copper and 10% silver. Depending on its copper content, the color of rose gold jewelry can vary, ranging from pink to pinkish-yellow.

375 - 9 CARAT GOLD

THE DESIGNATION 375 OR 9-CARAT GOLD

It indicates the proportion of fine gold in a piece of jewelry. Jewelry made of 375 gold is therefore composed of 375/1000ths fine gold and 625/1000ths other metals. Naturally malleable, gold must be alloyed with other metals to give it strength and ensure its durability. A piece of 375 gold jewelry is composed of 37.5% pure gold. Its gold content allows for the creation of jewelry with an appearance and luster equivalent to that of 750-th gold jewelry, while reducing its cost.

375 gold is also known as 9-karat gold.
9-karat gold means that in 24 g of alloy, there are 9 g, or 37.5% pure gold.

HALLMARKS AND GUARANTEES FOR 375° GOLD

Each piece of 375 gold jewelry must bear a responsibility hallmark identifying the jewelry’s origin 1, and a state hallmark in the shape of a clover 2 for pieces weighing more than 3g.
To be authorized to apply these hallmarks, a company must be certified by the government. MATY holds this certification, which authorizes us to apply them in our workshops in Besançon and thereby certify the correct gold content of your jewelry.

750 - 18-CARAT GOLD

THE 750 OR 18-CARAT GOLD DESIGNATION

It indicates the proportion of fine gold in a piece of jewelry. Since pure gold is highly malleable, 750 gold jewelry is composed of 75% pure gold and 25% other metals that give it its color and help strengthen it.
Since gold is naturally malleable, it must be alloyed with other metals to give it strength and ensure its durability. A piece of 750 gold jewelry is composed of 75% fine gold.

2 AND 3-TONE GOLD

A piece of gold jewelry can be made of 2-tone or 3-tone gold. This refers to yellow gold, 750 or 375, which is then coated with rose gold or rhodium, a shiny white precious metal, to give it various hues.

HOW DO I PRESERVE AND CARE FOR MY GOLD JEWELRY?

To keep your gold jewelry looking its best, we recommend cleaning it with a soft brush and soapy water. Then, rinse it with clean water, let it dry, and wipe it down with a soft cloth. We also offer a range of care products specifically designed for your jewelry. As for white gold, slight yellowish tints may appear over time. To restore its original luster and whiteness, bring it to our jewelers for rhodium plating.

THE HISTORY OF GOLD

As old as the Earth itself, gold was discovered a very long time ago. The Egyptians were the first to extract gold from the Nile and mine their deposits. Gold was used primarily for religious ceremonies and to adorn the powerful. Gold amulets have also been found in Egyptian tombs dating from each of the major periods of ancient Egypt.
Today, gold is mainly used in jewelry and fine jewelry.
On the occasion of the50th wedding anniversary, the “golden wedding” is celebrated. Gold, a precious and sturdy metal, much like a couple who have spent 50 years together.
